Job Description
The purpose of this position is to secure a geochemist with experience working numerous basins in North America and a track record in evaluating new ventures opportunities. The individual will be focusing on unconventional and hybrid opportunities that can include shale reservoirs, tight sandstones, or tight carbonates.
Performs specialist petroleum systems modelling and analysis. Advises the asset on suitable techniques to solve petroleum systems problems.
Performs geochemical data analysis:
- Advises the asset on suitable techniques to solve specific geochemistry problems
- QC and maintenance, where applicable, of databases to store corporate geochemical data
- Advises on the geochemical data acquisition strategies for the drilling of exploration and appraisal wells.
- Organizes and manages external contractors for provision of specialist geochemical services overseeing and QC their work products.
Provides a focal point for problems specific to petroleum systems modelling and analysis and advises and seeks company Advance and other external advice to resolve them.
Creating and maintaining key relationships:
- Mentors and coaches peers and graduate staff to develop petroleum systems analysis skills across the Group;
- Supports the Group Subject Matter Expert (GSME) of Petroleum Systems
- to develop a strategy for world class analysis of Petroleum Systems. Ensures that the work carried out in the asset meets internal assurance standards.
- Develops internal and external networks to enable sharing of best practice; and monitors the development of new and evolving technologies, investigating their relevance and applicability to the asset.
Communications:
Maintains links with industry experts, research institutes and university groups specializing in petroleum systems analysis as a member of the Petroleum Systems community within the company.
Skills & Experience
- Either a geochemistry or petroleum systems PhD, specialist MSc or equivalent post-graduate qualification in geoscience, geochemistry or petroleum systems analysis, or sufficiently relevant industry experience
- Experience in using PetroMod, Zetaware (Genesis & Trinity)
- Experience of working in different geological settings - clastics, carbonates, passive margins, thrust belts etc.
- Experience in unconventional exploration is preferred;
- A track record of broad-based expertise in all aspects of petroleum systems analysis and will be able to characterize petroleum systems at all scales from frontier basins to appraisal and field development;
- A detailed understanding of the following: heat flow processes and controls through time; assessment of source rock distribution, quantity and quality; kerogen type variability and its control on petroleum generation, expulsion and fluid composition; migration and entrapment of petroleum in the subsurface; pore pressure prediction;
- Familiarity with Petrel would be an advantage;
- Excellent written, verbal, visual/presentation communication skills and able to work effectively across different cultures;
- Highly collaborative - shares knowledge
- The ability to engage, influence and energize a wide range of stakeholders on the business benefits of technology applications in own area of expertise;
- Proven skills in time and project management; able to manage multiple projects concurrently;
- Experience of working in Mid-continent, Rockies, and/or Appalachia regions preferred
- Operational experience including well site operations, understanding of drilling operations, and a basic understanding of completion practices in unconventional reservoirs
- Experience of building effective networks with contractors, academia and external R&D bodies.
- Understands role and impact of the expertise and discipline within the wider business context - may have asset experience
This is a permanent position.
The salary for this position is negotiable.
