How to become petrophysicist

Hi,
I am Open as well as Cased hole wireline logging engineer with 5 years of experience. I did my graduation in Mechanical Engineering. I am thinking to be Petrophysicist. Are there any distance learning courses which can add value to my resume ? Please let me know.

Very good that you're thinking about becoming a petrophysicist; there are too few of us...
There are a lot of training courses that you can do, but PetroSkills is the biggest and most renown. The offer online (virtual) training: http://www.petroskills.com/page.aspx?id ... l&up0cat=1

their trainings costs quite a bit though and may bit difficult to finance without a company backing you. If that is the case than you can start reading Crains Petrophysical Handbook. It's an online resource located at: http://www.spec2000.net/ . Off course you won't have anything to show (certificate or degree) when you do this, but it will give you a head start!

I see you work for Halliburton. I believe that if you show aspiration and dedication they will be interested in expanding your knowledge and skills. I would discuss this with your supervisor. Many petrophysicists I know started as wireline logger. They have the advantage of knowing the tools that provide the data they analyse. Therefore they have good understanding of how measurements can be affected by hole conditions (caliper, fractioning, etc), drilling fluids (mud cakes, infiltration) and measurement errors.

This is very valuable for understanding petrophysics!!

Yes, there are some courses at my employer. But, whatever vacancies for Petrophysicist I see on internet ask for years of experience. I doubt how I will be to join operator company by just attending some short course. Moreover, in long run, I don't want to stay with service company working as petrophiysicist, otherwise the growth, earnings and learning, will be limited.

I understand. Without experience in petrophysics on your cv you will have a hard time entering a operator role. I think the only way is to grow within Halliburton, get the experience and then step over. Probably will be a three year plan you need to make for yourself and discuss your aspirations with your manager. Get the petrophysical exposure within your current service company or see kif other service companies will offer you the growth and development programs...

I agree with PetroBoss... Showing dedication and willingness should result in internal training opportunities at Halliburton. If they don't comply you can start looking for other service companies that do offer career paths for wireline loggers...

Get that dream job despite lack of skills and experience, don’t be afraid to start from the bottom and work your way up the ladder of success!

When you’re seriously passionate about something, it ought to not be complicated to exert effort to get to where you want. Some employers won't take the risk of hiring you should you do not have the necessary experience. So don’t stop with dreaming. Work on enhancing your portfolio. Attend seminars, conferences, training programs, or be part of volunteer programs within your community. Please, can one with Industrial physics degree directly study Msc in Petrophysics and what school is the best to do such. Thanks as I await your responses
