Post OpenDtect
has anybody been using the new free software called OpenDtect. I have installed it on my home machine and loaded the training cube; that all works fine. Only when running through the timeslices it takes such a long time and occasionally crashes. Is this a known bug or can I do something to fix it?

thanks

Jacob

We opened a new forum for this as we think this is a great project with a lot of potential. If only the rendering was a little faster this software would be rock solid.
Plus, the advantage of an open-source package, which usually explodes into greatness nowadays.

I think it just isn't possible to make an engine like Geoprobe or Petrel when your software is free... I bet that stuff is expensive and Petrel uses a special brick format (zgy, I think) to make rendering easier. I hope they'll try and mimic this in the future though. It'll force Schlumberger and Halliburton to start upgrading their software faster (and maybe make it cheaper).

Eventhough the engine is still somewhat slow, I love they way DGB offers several seismic cubes and data sets for free. This will open up possibilities for do-it-at-home practice settings, whithout compromising confidentiality agreements you have with your employer. Also students will be able to practice on actual datasets, which will hopefully boost their user group.

The files can be downloaded here: http://www.opendtect.org/osr/

Great job DGB! Keep it up

The problem with open source is the code optimization. Hopefully new releases will have better rendering and faster response. In the mean time, I think this project should be support to break the monopoly of other companies and get some competition going on. Plus, the free datasets don't hurt.

This is new to me. Are any companies you know of using this software for commercial purposes. I feel the industry has reached a point that it accepts the high pricing of software (whats 100 k when one well is often 100 times as much), so this better be good to gain some ground. Budgets are there to be spent! This will probably end up being used only for personal use, educational purposes and maybe some small consultancy firms.

Am I wrong?

Actually yes, most of the companies would prefer softwares from reliable vendors. What if for some reason this new project gets closed. Then all the extra training and deployment would go to waste. Big companies tend to stick with one software and work on it. It's hard to train users and let's be honest not everyone is skilled when it comes to computers.

So, yes it will be adopted for personal use but this project kicks off, who knows it might become closed sourced and sold a to company.

Well... If you're a small company and don't have the budget I personally would consider having several interpreters use openDtect. Surfaces and seismic attribute cubes could then be generated cheap and imported fairly easily in more top-of-the-range integrated programs like Petrel or Decision Space. This way you could have multiple people viewing the seismic (and well logs) and use their output for the final modeling and analysis.

Regardless off support it offers a quick and cheap work around for getting geologists viewing 3D seismic cubes. Maybe DGB will even come up with seamless integration into Openworks or the Petrel Project Reference Tool.
