Post subject:  Odd Rock - Need assistance identifying
Hello, I am not a preofessional geologist but on my spare time collect interesting and beautiful rocks. Being in Newfoundland I am quite blessed. This past weekend I located the most interesting rock ever and that lies totally in the unknown, I have no clue what this is. I have searched google but no really similar images came up.

I figure it could be a geode as it's oval shape is what attracted.

It's dimensions are approximately 2.5 inchs * 2 inchs wide *1.5 inchs.

It may be worth noting it is not magnetic, and it weight is that of a metal.

Welcome to the forums! To me this looks much like the outside of a Marcasite nodule. I've found similar spherical rocks in Calais, France, just across from the white cliffs of Dover. You could try and see if it scratches into metal and if it leaves behind a black streak when scratched against a white porcelain tile.

The best way to find out is to bust it open. If you would do so (hopefully) you will discover a beautiful spherical crystal that looks like Pyrite.

That does indeed lead me in a direction that looks correct. I will post the full collection of stones I have collected when I get home, I have roughly 20 of these stones, the image posted being the largest and most interesting due to the unnatural circle on it.

The interior of the other stones I have are indeed very similar to Pyrite, only more white as indicated by the readings your post lead me to further confirming your assumption.

Instead I have placed all the rocks in a vinegar & salt solution. I will post images of them once they have shed their extrior layer.

Most geologists will tell you that it is some form of concretion. Although, in its early stages, our planet was bombarded with many asteroids and comets. As an asteroid will mostly burn away and leave only iron, a comet produces meteors of mainly ice, sand, gravel, and some boulder-sized. The element of these rocks being encased in ice still on impact, will produce many odd impactites. This has been mainly overlooked until recently.

It is my opinion that, many, if not most of the rocks that are presently considered to be concretions, supposedly created by a sedimentary process and exhumed from thousands of feet, are actually cometary impactites.

So, I would say have one checked for shocked quartz, fusion crust, and iridium before a final decision. They may be concretions, but I would strongly consider them being impactites.

I had not posted any as the results as they were not spectacular.

I will indeed get some taken and posted today as it seems people are watching!

Additionally I left them in the bath for about a week rather than just an evening.
