Post subject:  Collaboration on a facies training images database

Our company is currently developing a database of training images for fluvial facies modeling. We are pulling and manipulating datasets from our own database and testing the procedures quite extensively. However, I can not imagine other companies are not also doing this. My understanding is that the bigger and more varied the dataset the sturdier the modeling capabilities and statistical 'rightness' of the output. Are any of these datasets for sale and are there possibilities of joining datasets? Is SLB (for Petrel) taking the setup of such a database on? I would think they could be a good mediator in this and prevent any confidentially problems coming up.

Just my 50 cents...

I don't think this is currently being set-up, but it's certainly a good idea. But before the ideas of a down-the-line facies modeler reach management that can initiate these initiatives the use of training images will need to be proven (in an economical sense).

That's a pity, but usually the way it works..

On this issue. Training images are often used for fluvial or clastic environments (like in the petrel manual for this module). They are far more valuable though and this article shows their use in carbonate reef complexes. http://www.searchanddiscovery.com/docum ... /index.htm

We are currently engaged in such a modeling project and are getting some impressive results. The output of the modeling is just as good as our input and assumptions though, like in any model. We acknowledge this and basically our outcome is what we would expect and what we would also have created by hand, based on our understanding of facies distribution. Therefore I feel that what you propose - to get more robust and elaborate training image databases - is very valuable. I give it a couple of years and this collaborative project will be kicked off...

great idea and very interesting forums!

Thanks for that article Stan. I'm downloading it now.
