Post Seismic Subsurface Investigation
Dear all

I am seeking information on the availability and cost of either seismic or ground penetrating radar surveys, to be conducted on land in western Europe.

Maximum depth of resolution required would be around 10-15m.
Borehole data from the site exists for checking the survey results.

If anyone can give advice or suggest a more appropriate forum for this question I would be most grateful.

thanks

Kaliem

Dear Kaliem,

I was forwarded this note from a colleague at LAW engineering in Tampa, FL. Some brief notes-your required depth of investigation of 10-15 m is definately within the range of most commerical GPR systems. A qualifier-the depth of penetration of the GPR signal is very contingent upon soil conductance. Soil conductivity in most instances is controlled by clay/organic content and degree of saturation. With your borehole information it would be possible to model what the anticipated depths might be-an electrical log would be the most helpful. Seismic might work depending upon your target of interest. At that shallow of a depth you probably would want to go with shear-wave reflection or shear wave refraction (depending upon your target). Costs here in the States would be 1500-2000 dollars per day for the GPR. Seismic is more expensive-running from 2000-3500 per day (depending upon the technique). In general, the data acquisition rate for GPR is 10 to 20 times higher than that for seismic. So if you can use GPR-you'll be $'s ahead. If you are interested in a Yank to do the work give me a response. For a referral of GPR operators in Europe go to http://www.geophysics.com (this is the web site for the worlds largest manufacturer of GPR). They can give you some local contacts.

Best of Luck!

Dear Matheuw

Thank you for your well constructed and helpful response.
I doubt we could afford to hire 'a yank' (!) but thanks for the offer.

The website also has some good info...
