Hi Guys!! What are peoples thoughts on the big exciting things happening in petroluem geology and exploration? A friend asked me today what I thought the new frontiers of the science of petroleum geology, including exploration and extraction were, i said pre salt, ultra deep sea, shale gas, fraccing. But I was wondering what all you guys thought too, could be an interesting discussion? Thanks Barry |

Barry, I think another exciting development is capture of carbon dioxide for EOR in residual oil saturation zones, ROZ, (see AAPG Explorer Dec. 2011, p 42-43). 11.9 Bbls are quoted as producible in the Permian Basin alone, while producible reserves in the whole USA could increase by 30 to 50% by applying carbon dioxide utilization technology in ROZ zones. Thus CO2 emisions that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere could be used to increase oil production. Welcome your views. Colin |

Residual oil saturation zones are transition zones below defined oil water contacts, it is good idea to exploite these zones. Whats about the exploitation of hydrocarbons from oil migration pathways espacially in sandstones where hydrocaron saturation is almost 50 to 60%. Nazir Ahmad[quote] |
