All,

Based on the Demo video from IP, the zone is divided into several small zone when the clay volume is calculated. Could you tell me why we should do that? What criteria are indispensable for doing that?

In case of dry hole or of the absence of hydrocarbons, but we want to study the reservoirs (to estimate their petrophysical parameters). Should we split the zone?

Best regards,

Milky Way

Milky Way,

Zonation is done when there are changes in petrophysical properties or geological formations. It is very rare that the clay parameters remain the same throughout the whole well from top to bottom, especially for long intervals. Therefore, if you do not zone the clay parameters properly, like GRmin and GRmax for example, you will end up with wrong Vclay values. Likewise, if the geological formations change, e.g. different sand groups or different depositional environment, the clay parameters should also be zoned to reflect these changes.

Even if a well is dry and does not contain any hydrocarbon, you should do zonation to calculate the petrophysical properties correctly.
