Post subject:  What are the Prospects for a career in Sequence Straigraphy

Is it possible for one to get a job after masters and specialization topic of masters as sequence stratigraphy ?

Is it possible if anyone can guide me, about the companies I should approach? Or is sequence stratigraphy still a topic of interest in University level research only?

A specialization in sequence strat can certainly be beneficial for finding a job. Most oil and gas fields and exploration activities are still in clastic systems, but I see more and more focus towards applying sequence strat to carbonates. A specialisation in carbonate sedimentology (and diagenisis) may therefore also be a good choice... but please focus on what interests you, rather than on job perspective.

Concerning sequence stratigraphy jobs: try applying for roles on seismic interpretation or well correlation as you will need to apply the principles and thereby start understanding the many pitfalls and exceptions to the 'rules'. Sequence stratigraphy principles may already be confusing to learn, but applying it correctly requires a lot of experience... a lot of experience!

You could try contacting the big operators or smaller consultants like: http://www.neftex.com/Consultancy/Default.aspx, http://www.millennialimited.co.uk/bio_s ... raphy.html or http://www.geolink-s2.fr/ but they are more likely to hire experienced professionals.

Hope this helped and good luck! It's a wonderful discipline!

Thanks for the reply.

But as you have asked about the interest, then I would like to add more. Initially I was interested in Glaciology. But as we see that there are no jobs in market for Glaciologists then I thought of sequence stratigraphy. Although Sequence stratigraphy is an awesome field and I have a lot of interest in it , but still my first love are Glaciers. Is it possible, that it can be applied for the glacial regions?

That's a very interesting suggestion!
I have not come across papers that address sequences produced by glaciers and specifically recognize sequences based on the relation between sedimentation and accommodation. Theoretically it would be possible but would probably touch more on fluvial sequence strat where the interplay between supply and discharge (energy level) will define sequence characteristics. That is, in mountainous regions, where I believe only the sedimentary succession of recent times remain.
Where glaciers hit the ocean, eustatic baselevel will probably start affecting deposition and this may lead to a very interesting sedimentary successions. These successions will probably look most like gilbert type delta's with generally coarse clasts, but the delta top may show unusual erosional patterns due to glacial expansion.

On a larger scale glaciations can be tied to mayor sequences based on cycles in run-off, sediment supply and base-level change being temporally related. For example, the Mediterranean is believed to have higher sediment input during glacial lowstands in response to higher seasonality during that time (Collier et al.; if I remember correctly). I believe Leeder et al. has also modeled this relationship, but also noticed that during glacial maxima (lowstands), in the Great-Basin and south-western USA, precipitation was higher and caused downhill spread of forests reducing catchment erodability (and thus sediment supply). These are just two examples of how glaciations influence sediment supply and eustatic base-level in an opposite manner. A lot of work can still be done in this field as impacts of glacial cyclicity has been recognized in many era's of world history and is thus likely to have affected sedimentary sequences.

It remains a topic that I feel still raises a lot questions and can be a very rewarding field of study.

That was a wonderful reply.

But considering the kind of research going on in the Industry, is there any possibility to get a job in this field of area? I think that no such kind of job is available as per now, but are there any chances that petroleum companies would like to hire people for sequence stratigraphy of glaciated regions. As we have come to know that it is supposed that there are huge reserves of hydrocarbons below continental glaciers, hence, is it possible to do seismic sequence stratigraphy for that region? Have companies started thinking in this kind of research?

I haven't come across people in this particular field... There may be R&D departments moving into this terain, but for know your best bet would probably to be tot go for a phd and become a true expert. If you already know what particular field of geology interests you most, doing a phd is always a good step I believe.

Doing Ph.D is not just a university level research but certainly it can broaden your careers as a Senior Sequence Stratigrapher world-wide. You will be working in multiple disciplines such as prospect scale interpretations, pre-drill stratigraphic frameworks and reservoir evaluation and characterization.

If you are thinking about glacial sequence stratigraphy, it is surely something different and there are thick stratigraphic sequences of glacial, glacimarine and marine sediments in Northern Sea and towards the edge of the continental shelf of the west Shetland Platform.

Also if you are thinking about whether to specialize in clastic or carbonate stratigraphy, best option would be carbonates since more than 60% of the worlds oil and 40% of the world's gas reserves are held in carbonate reservoirs. Also companies are heading towards unconventional reservoirs, whether its conventional or unconventional but proven oil and gas reserves are in carbonate reservoirs.

If you are thinking what kind of companies you should be targeting, here is one where you can work as Sequence Stratigrapher following your Ph.D.

It was great to hear from you. Thanks for your advice.

I would try to find out good Universities offering PhD's in sequence stratigraphy.

Its your choice where you would like to specialize in, but best bet would be canadian universities. One university is University of Saskatchewan where they offer you high level sequence stratigraphic courses as well as you would be researching. Other schools are Queens University which is considered one of the top schools in Canada for Earth Sciences. But best bet is to stick in Western Canada universities since they have way more projects going on in Western Canada Sedimentary Basin than eastern Canada.
