general history of sedimentology

hi all
The branch of geology which deals with the study of sediments is known as sedimentology.The word sedimentology was proposed by H A Wadell in 1932.
"The word sediment is derived from Latin sedimetum means settling"
Royal Challenger 1872-1876
The royal challenger expidition was launched by the Royal society of London to study the oceans scientifically. Bottom sounding was first used with wires attached at one end. They published the results in more than 50 volumes.This led the foundation of modern sedimentology and oceanography.
