Last week Schlumberger announced their new wireless downhole testing system (). From what I understand is that it uses quartz gages and transmits the data through electro-magnetic technology. As communication is bi-directional control of the Intelligent Remote Dual Valves is possible. I understand the need for such systems and how handy it can be to control valves without needing well intervention. Furthermore the testing data provided during a well flow and shut-in without this need for intervention prevents data loss.
My only question is is how these systems are powered and their downside....
Is there some sort of battery system, or is everything controlled and charged (the electro-magnetic signal and the valve control) through pressure and fluid flow? Is there some sort of mini-generator and does this at all affect the flow through a well, what are the effects and possible downsides of this system (most systems have some....)?
thanks for your response!
