Post Flow in oil and gas wells
We estimate to have a 250 ft lower zone and only perforated 10 feet of the 250 ft interval. This produced a flow rate of 0.5 mmcfg/d. With this information can we 'safely' say/estimate that when we open up the residual 230 ft we will obtain a much higher flow rate. I personally believe that a greater zone would increase pressure to the top of the well because their is more gas/oil that is flowing. My colleagues say that as it is the same reservoir body the pressure will be the same everywhere and flow rate will not increase.

I hope you understand what I am trying to say here and that I can get an answer (and prove my colleagues wrong).

Hey chartreau

I am not an expert on oil and gas - most of my experience is with water wells.

I agree with your logic here - greater open area to your well should increase flow rate. However if you are depending on formation pressure to push the fluid into the hole - that will decrease as the flow rate (and open area) increases. So I suspect that there is an optimum balance there. I suggest contacting an expert on oil and gas, try Schlumberger website ( they have a great oilfield glossary), maybe Halliburton, call an oil field services company near you and see if you can have a quick talk with an expert. Good luck!!

Mike
