Post Body Edge detection in Petrel
Hey everybody!
Just found these forums through a google search and I'm pretty impressed with the activity I'm seeing. I'm eager to join the discussion, but will have to enter it with a query on body edge detection in Petrel.
I want to design a workflow for detecting body edges so I can create transmisibility barrier. I know how this can be done using segment or fault boundaries, but I'm trying to do it on discrete properties (assigned to the grid cells). I have determined several facies and geobodies using deterministic techniques and want to create a file that can be used with MULTX, MULTX-, MULTY etc. keywords in Eclipse. Does anybody have ideas for this or some sort of documentation that may help?
Can it be done in Petrel RE from the indicator property?

thanks,

-Marry

Mary,

Welcome!! I remember an ocean store plugin that might help you...

Thanks Jacob.

That should indeed do the trick, but is there no quick work around, without me having to go to my manger and requesting this plugin. All this stuff needs to go through our support system, which is sort of a hassle even though it costs only 50 bucks.

There migth be a workaround without the plugin.
If your geobody is a sandlens, channel, etc than probably the best way to do this is by using the discrete property as the FLUXNUM or MULTNUM region property. Next, use the keyword editor to add the MULTREGT keyword to the Eclipse dataset. This automatically multiplies the transmissibility of all the connections between two regions. This will save you a lot of trouble figuring out which cells are on the edges.

If finding the edges is absolutely necessary, because you have a lot of isolated shale lenses of which you want to upscale out and preserve their presence as a barrier, then there is a new feature in the 2010.2 release. By using the property calculator and referring to adjacent cell properties you can find the edges.

Try using the folowing example:
MULTZ=IF(FACIES=1 AND FACIES[I,J,K+1]=0, 0, 1)

This will give a cell a MULTZ of 0 at each gridcell where a FACIES=1 (could be sand) borders FACIES=0 (could be shale), Else the MULTZ property is 1.

hope this helped.
