Three-phase oil, gas and water relative permeability (relperm) data are very difficult, time-consuming and expensive to measure in the laboratory.

There are also persistent difficulties to accurately plot the data on the appropriate curves (e.g. ternary diagrams).

Hence, researchers have proposed several correlation or empirical models or equations that use two-phase data to predict three-phase relative permeabilities. However, none of these models are able to accurately match the laboratory measured data.

We propose to use certain equations (as functions of two of the three fluid saturations) that can do very good (smooth-curve) fitting of three-phase relative permeability data. Because of superior data fitting, the equations provide an opportunity to (a) re-interpret existing data (15 examples presented) and (b) establish a conclusive scheme for plotting and interpolating three-phase relative permeability data.

Another very unique and valuable feature of the equations is the capability to use two-phase data (generated after fitting three-phase data) to “reversibly” generate three-phase data. This means that we can use two-phase data to accurately predict three-phase data.

The algorithm for the fitting equations has been implemented in a software called MSF-MAKER (which means multi-phase saturation functions maker).

The fitting equations also show remarkable (slightly less accurate) capability for three-phase gas-oil and oil-water capillary pressures. However, because of the lack of complete three-phase capillary data available in the literature, no example of curve-fitting of this data is presented.(Chapter 7 in the Ebook shows a curve-fitting example using arbitrary data generated from two-phase data).
