Looks like some sort of chert to me. But indeed could be petrified wood, although the structure is not that well defined (or visible on the foto's).
Chert is flacky and was used to make spears. Does the rock chip easily and do the flackes have a radial patern on the cleavage side?

It does look like chert, specifically, because of the color banding, petrified wood. If it is chert, it should scratch glass as well as the side of a knife blade, and if you look at it under magnification, you should not be able to see distinct crystals. My bet is petrified wood.
