Need help with identifying rock

Thu May 02, 2013 10:27 pm

I found this rock in a natural valley, in a deposit of similarly sized and shaped rocks. The deposit was roughly between a metre or two below the mixture of sand and dirt on the top layers.
The rock has rough edges, with indents and remnants of air pockets. It is dark in colour, opaque, and is not magnetic. It is solid and does not crumble, but also looks very brittle- glassy at smooth areas. I haven't tested if it's flammable, or have I tested its hardness.
It is mostly dark black in colour, but one side is fused with what looks like dirt. The "dirt" does not crumble, will not wash off, and also has glassy looking air bubble remnants. The "dirt" blends seamlessly in with the black regions, sharing air bubbles, indents, and is almost as moderately reflective as the darker areas. The dark parts of the rock are as dark as black, while the "dirt" areas will vary from a sandy, worn out tarmac road colour to slightly crystallized sand. The "dirt" maintains its form when scratched.
The rock does not feel metallic, and it does not feel as dense as metal. It can reflect light somewhat well, like an opaque plastic water bottle. The side where most of the dirt is feels gritty like sandpaper, and the dark black areas vary from feeling like stained glass (unevenly smooth), to rough (due to the air bubble remnants). When put in a room at room temperature, it remains consistent with the temperature in the room.
Pictures: Sorry about the blurriness, but I did manage to capture one shot (first link) that is less blurred than the rest.
