Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Relaxation Times of Water
Description: This chart provides an approximation of the bulk relaxation time (T1) of pure water depending on the temperature of the water. Determining the bulk and diffusion relaxation time (T2) from this chart requires knowledge of both the formation temperature and the echo spacing (TE) used to acquire the data. These data are presented graphically on the log and are the basis of the water or hydrocarbon interpretation of the zone of interest. The chart relation is for pure water—the additives in drilling fluids reduce the relaxation time (T1) of water in the invaded zone. The two major contributors to the reduction are surfactants added to the drilling fluid and the molecular interactions of the mud filtrate contained in the pore spaces and matrix minerals of the formation. The relaxation time (T2) determination is based on the formation temperature and echo spacing used to acquire the measurement. The TE value is listed in the parameter section of the log. Using the T2 measurement from a known water sand or based on local experience further aids in determining whether a zone of interest contains hydrocarbons, water, or both.
