Compensated Neutron Log (CNL)
The CNL compensated neutron log tool has a radioactive source that bombards the formation with neutrons. In the formation part of these neutrons are slowed and others are absorbed primarily by hydrogen atoms. The slowed neutrons deflected back to the tool, where detectors pick them up and count them.
Hydrogen atoms occur primarily in formation water, clay bound water or in gas. After the measurements are scaled they can reflect (total) porosity units. Using other logs these measurements can be made more accurate and clay bound water (irreducable water) or gas saturation can be assessed.
CNL tools are usually run together with other tools and can help you assess Porosity, Lithologies, Clay types and volumes and Gas.
