Sonic Velocity (SVEL)

This is an abbreviation for a well log used in the oil and gas industry. You might have encountered this acronym SVEL in your log evaluation software or any (ASCII) log files provided by the logging company. Sonic Velocity is the offical name for this log. The business value of this log is often deamed high.

This log displays readings of the velocity of a compressional acoustic wave (Vp).

So basically this is a measure of the rate of change of the displacement of a body in time.

This log usually has the unit 'Acoustic Velocity'. This is the velocity of an acoustic wave which represents the rate at which the wave travels from one point to another. Used generally for all elastic and seismic waves.

Data for this log is produced by a tool that uses a acoustic logging technique and can be used to investigate the velocity of the formation. Similar logs are listed below:
